The Greater Glider Petauroides volans |
Twelve specially built nest boxes were purchased from Latrobe Wildlife Sanctuary and installed in the creek reserves amongst the tall Mountain Ash forest.
Greater Glider habitat along the Number Two Creek. |
During spotlighting as part of a fauna survey along the Number Two Creek in November 2011 members of the Kinglake Landcare Group were lucky to observe a Greater Glider gliding from tree to tree. Since then more have also been observed at the nearby Kinglake East Flora Reserve.

Hi Chris, I'm very interested in finding out in what circumstances Greater Gliders use nest-boxes and what preferences they have for size, placement etc. I'll be watching with interests to see how yours go. Do you know of any studies along these lines? Bert.
Hi Bert,
Thanks for your comment. We installed our boxes on the SE side of the trees and 6m high (6-8m is recommended)6m is the limit of our nest box inspection camera. I haven't heard of any local studies but the QLD Glider Network is doing lots of good things: http://www.wildlife.org.au/projects/gliders/
